Home On The Range

I've been ranging around again this month, going from small pencil sketches to large-scale oil painting and everything in between. Sometimes I'll settle on a certain way of working, as in the mixed-media drawings below. The only constants seem to be outdoor painting and work from the model. I've been thinking about still-life and landscape-based abstraction, but my attention keeps returning to the figure.

I draw & paint from the model every week. In good weather, we work outside. The complexity
of space and color in natural light almost always generates unexpected results.

"Figure & Lemon Tree"-acrylic on paper, 12" X 9"

The sources for this set of mixed-media drawings are usually photographs and previous drawings. Sometimes, as in the case of the first image in this group, I reverse standard practice and let a completed painting serve as a study for the drawing.

"Arranging Her Hair"-mixed media on paper, 9" X  7"

Large-scale painting can be as intimate as a sketchbook drawing. This 4x5-foot canvas had the usual sources, a drawing from the model & a photograph from the drawing session. There's an odd combination of early & late 20th century approaches to the figure here. The challenge was to connect the elements of the composition through the tactile nature of the surface.  I'm not sure it all works, but then again, I'm often the worst judge of my own work.

That Path

What I’m always painting is my inability to paint. I’m always drawing on my inability to draw. When I try to paint real things, what’s called in the business “painting from life,” I get stuck  in a dream of real things. Impossible skin, protective water, the ethics in the planes of a face.

Better artists tend to paint their abilities. This honors the world outside, as well as the painter's own gifted or hard-won skills. Skilled work is always highly valued in this world, and justifiably so, but it also tends to devalue inconsistency. Like the beautiful, palpable mistake of a yellow-white square that indicates the sky.

There’s a current of acquired clumsiness in academy-trained artists that’s a corollary here, faux-naiveté in the service of The Next Big Thing. You see it all over the art magazines, but only the career-obsessed would hide their abilities under a brightly painted rock.

To paint honestly is to work with what you have and what you don’t. I want to go farther along that path, even when I use the same bad judgment as everyone else.

The process of taking the world in and out of sequence is the only ritual I know.

AIMS IN SPRING

After focusing on larger paintings for my last show, I’ve started spring with smaller studies and drawings. At Wilder Ranch, I’ve been trying out different approaches to structure in the landscape, thinking a lot about what distance does to color.

I’ve also continued to draw from the model.  Settings have been pushed outdoors, or interior forms have been diffused, to help the figure take its contour from surrounding space.

I’m lost in these things, but productively lost. I hope you enjoy the results.

Figure Drawing/Figure Painting

I want to encourage all of you to attend my upcoming show at Iveta. (See the announcement at the end of this post). Most of my recent shows featured smaller work, but this will be a rare chance to exhibit the larger figure paintings I’ve been working on these past few years. Iveta is a great venue. I hope to see you there on Friday, March 7 at the opening reception.

This month I want to present a set of mixed-media figure drawings on the blog. They’re not on-the-spot contour drawings, and though the poses come from life-drawing sessions, the drawings shown here are reconsiderations done from photos and/or sketches from the model. They took many hours to complete, and the majority of them were reworked over several days. This kind of work is the opposite of spontaneous. Instead, it resembles the slow-build process that occurs in a large-format oil painting, with additions and subtractions pulling the image to its mark.

Winter Crop

I've been looking ahead to a show of large-scale figure paintings. The majority of the pieces have already been featured on the blog, but I'm happy to say that I'm starting to see something new in them. I recently re-photographed work for the show and it seemed to me that, when they were cropped, several paintings presented another side of themselves. I’ve assembled a few of these photographic details into the current entry.

Twenty For 2013

It’s been a productive year, and I’ve had great support from everyone who follows the blog. I’m ending with twenty new images of small-scale paintings and sketchbook drawings.  There’s a lot I could say about each one, but this time I thought I’d give them their privacy.

I hope we can all go farther in the year ahead.
